Preparing for 20th Sunday after Pentecost

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading (Matthew 22:15-22) we hear Jesus’ response to the disciples of the Pharisees and the Herodians  (who were the polar opposite of Pharisees religiously and politically) when they try to trap him by asking him if it was lawful to pay taxes to the Emperor? Jesus turns the tables on them by asking them to show him the coin used to pay the tax. Since the Roman coin had the image of the Emperor on it and was inscribed “Lord Tiberius Cesar,”  by them having one in their possession (which they did), it would be a giant nose-thumbing  to the First Commandment. When Jesus says “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s,” He is not saying: “You have your secular money and your religious money. Give the first to Cesar and the second to God.  He says “Give to God the things that are God’s.”  The question for you to ponder this week is: “What belongs to God that I am supposed to have the say over how it is used or spent?”
